How Will Metz Makes $10K Monthly With Guitar Coaching
Interview Transcript
The $10K Guitar Coach Reveal
Max: How much did you make exactly last month?
Will: 10,796 dollars.
Max: What was like a standout lesson that the program helped you with?
Will: I think the biggest thing is understanding that I didn’t have to be the broke musician. I didn’t have to undervalue my skills.
Max: So our client Will just made $10,000 a month with drum roll… guitar coaching! It’s really easy nowadays to make money as an online coach in an instrument or any sort of musical niche. And if you want to know how, we’re going to crack right into the interview. He does not have a big brand, he’s not running ads or any of that. It’s literally just organic. So in that regard, let’s crush!
Max: So yeah, like I said, I’m just meeting another client, Patrick. He’s chilling over there. He’s also making 10-20K a month with B2B, so that’s obviously also cool and beautiful. Should I put my sunglasses on? Kind of sound is like squeaky, but hey! So honestly, congrats man! How much did you make exactly last month?
Will: It was like 11,000 pretty much. Like 10,900 something.
Max: Dollars or Euros?
Will: Dollars. $10,796 to be exact.
Max: Congrats man! And you guitar coaching, you know how cool is that?
Will: I see ridiculous!
Max: You got the branding on point, sitting here with the guitar and all that jazz, man. You know, as a failed musician, it’s always nice to see musician clients crush it, you know. So I’m so happy for you man, I’m so happy for you.
From Strats To Success – The Guitar Collection & Teaching Method
Max: So first of all, what guitars do you have? Walk me through. I want to know just personally, I want to know.
Will: I’m a Fender dude. So for some reason, my first one is actually in Ibanez. It was the Stevie model because I was really into Stevie when I was… the gem. And I actually, I hadn’t used it in a while. I just sold it to one of my first students because he’s crushing it, and so I was like, “You have my first guitar.” Now it’s a… I’ve got two Strats, a Gretsch, a Telecaster, and then an acoustic guitar. I don’t have like 20 guitars. I’m pretty minimalist.
Max: Still nice though, man. Hell yeah, hell yeah! I got a bunch. I mean, I got a Washburn that was my first one, then I got an Epiphone actually. Which one was the one I bought? Was that an Epiphone that I bought in Prague? The seven string, yeah. I bought a seven string Epiphone for like a month, for the one month I’m in Prague. And my main axe is a Dean Razorback Dime Darrell signature model, which I got for… yeah, I got it for high school graduation because I graduated with highest honors. I was school best, class best, of course, and school best. So I got a really nice guitar. But again, I don’t play as much anymore, especially because I’m traveling. So I’m always, you know, my heart always goes out for folks like you who are crushing it. So that’s beautiful.
Max: So what is it exactly that you’re teaching your clients?
Will: So I take them on the… I don’t take beginners, and I’m actually a huge nerd, and so I love theory. That’s my thing. It’s… I love music theory, not just because to nerd about it, but because it really helps people improvise and understand music and know what to play. You know, what scales to use over what. And so I take people on like an intermediate level. Make sure that they already know how to play some scales, some chords, that they have some technique. But usually guitarists get to a point where they’re really stuck, kind of in the same things, and they don’t really understand what they’re doing. They don’t, and it keeps them frustrated, stuck. And so I take them at this level and I say, “Hey, whenever you’re ready, you know, if you feel like you’re in that position, I’ll teach you music.” I’ve been teaching it forever. I wrote two books that were published on music theory, actually. I was like 25 when I was in… I did one year of music school, the middle of the year, and six months in the program, I wrote two books like in a row. And I did it originally to help my friends that were struggling with theory and improvisation, and I was starting taking some notes, and all of a sudden I was just going. I was like, “All right.”
Max: Might as well write two books, right? We know how it goes.
Will: Yeah man, it’s really funny honestly, because even back then actually, I was starting… I just started following you in your previous channels, and you know, you already like kind of were pumping me up with like trying to get my stuff together and everything. I was like, “You know what? Yeah, I’m going to get my stuff together and write some books.” And so, so yeah, it’s really cool.
Max: That’s beautiful man, that’s beautiful.
Breaking The Broke Musician Mindset
Max: And you passed on the knowledge and you… you know, one of the things that I always have had an issue with the whole idea of becoming a professional musician was that the pay that you’re getting, and therefore the quality of your life, is not directly correlated with the work you’re putting in as a musician. I mean, you know all these viral videos where like the world’s best violinist is playing in the subway New York and nobody cares, right? And I’m like, musicians should be paid equal to the skill level that they have, but that’s not how nowadays world works. That’s not how the economy works. So I always think it’s really beautiful that when a musician comes to us and they take their skills and for the first time they monetize it in a way so they actually get paid appropriately. And you know, 10K a month is a nice start, but it’s definitely a step into the right direction, getting paid appropriately. I mean, we have another client just earlier this week, he made his first $25,000 close for mandolin coaching, right? And that’s again like, you know, and he came from the classic background of like, you know, charging 25 bucks per hour kind of thing. And you can only charge so much per hour. Yeah, you can increase your prices to 50 bucks or even 100 bucks per hour, but even that is tough, you know. So it’s always really nice.
Max: You know, since you… here’s what I want to know from you is like, since you already had a lot of skills in the field of coaching, specifically your instrument, when you came into our FBM program, what was kind of like the biggest lesson? What was like a standout lesson that the program helped you with?
Will: Oh man, I mean, it’s hard to just pick one, you know. It was… I think the biggest thing honestly is understanding that I didn’t have to be the broke musician and that I didn’t have to… I didn’t have to undervalue my skills like you’re saying. And that I could actually be like, “You know what? I can step up. I worked hard. I have something I can teach, and yeah, I should be able to value what I know like this, and I should feel comfortable with it.” And I think that… so that mindset shift was pretty huge. The environment of FBM obviously helps a lot because everyone’s kind of like that, and so you’re like, “Yeah, you know what? Whatever. Here you go, 2K for a guitar program,” which I would have never thought I would have charged. And so that’s a big thing. But then of course, there’s all the other like practical aspects of how to craft the offer and all these things. And that of course is something, you know, you think you kind of know, but you really don’t. And so having people that actually like you, that know what they’re doing, and seeing other people do it. So I would say maybe like the emulation, the environment was a huge thing in the program.
Max: Yeah, I hear it a lot. I hear it a lot, especially, you know, lately where we really worked on the community feeling, the one-on-one coaching aspect where every client gets a one-on-one coach and all that jazz. It really helps out with that.
Max: What was I going to ask? You know, I think it’s really interesting also that you said in terms of the pricing, it really helped you with that. And it’s not just like you’re making now a price up like, “Go, I was going to charge 2K now, good luck.” It’s also that, you know, you’re also giving much more for these higher-priced clients. You’re going above and beyond for them. So everybody wins. You win, those guys win, everybody wins, you know.
Max: How do you teach your clients? Is it only online?
Will: Yeah, so I’m actually starting to evolve, talking with Roberto in different directions. But for the first part, I was just focused on one-on-one students online, kind of like a lesson type. But I also offer, of course, the feedback. And so we would exchange videos through WhatsApp, and that’s kind of how I give them like, “Hey, play this scale,” and then they would play the scale and they would send me a video, and I’d be like, “Oh, you have to fix this or do that or that. Great, keep going.” So they get the benefit of having me as the coach and the knowledge accessible between sessions, and they don’t feel like they have to be in the dark. I remember when I was taking lessons, it was like I would get out of my lesson, and that’s when all my questions would come up. I was like, “Oh wait, I forgot to ask him this. Oh wait, I did…” So and then I waited the next lesson, and the next lesson was all about answering all these questions, and you waste a bunch of time. And so I think that’s also what accelerates the progress too.
Will: So that… but it’s mostly one-on-one to answer your question more directly. And now I’m trying to think, “Okay, I just created a Facebook group, got all my clients on there, starting to post some more like inner things.” I was in the studio recording last week for a whole week almost, and posting some little insides of like, “Hey, I’m actually warming up for the studio. Like, those are the exercises I’m giving you, and I’m actually doing it right now, so you can see like how I do things even as a professional musician and stuff.” And so I’m trying to get more of that community aspect because of how helpful it is, and I’ve noticed that…
Max: Hell yeah, that’s cool! And again, like yeah, you’re right. I mean, like if you do it right online, it’s always more valuable than the in-person stuff. And you know, I remember when I wanted to… I taught myself guitar at first, and then I always wanted to have a coach or a teacher, and I was willing to work for it, you know. But in my village in Austria, there was none. There was one teacher, and I was on the waiting list, and the waiting list was 3 years long, right? So here I am, 14 years old, I’m like, “3 years? Like, that’s like a quarter of my life. You know, I’m not going to be able to wait 3 years.” So I had to go to the neighboring village. It was a 1 and a half hour train ride that I had to take every Tuesday after school. Take the train right there, then because the train times were different, so then I had to wait in that other village at the train station for an hour till my lesson was. Then I had the lesson, then I had to wait another hour till the train back. So I would, you know, leave in the morning to go to school at 7:00, and then I would come back at like 9:00 PM on the days where I had the lessons, you know. And I would have killed for the opportunity to be taught online just with Zoom or whatever, right? And it’s just so beautiful and the technology allows that. Not only, you know, for you to make all this money and all that, but also like for the clients to get all that value from you in such a more comfortable way, you know. Nobody has to go anywhere anymore. It’s just like laptop on and off we go, right? And like you said, they’re in touch with you throughout the week as well where they can… where you can answer questions and stuff. So that’s really cool.
From Musician To Business Owner – The Transformation
Max: Now we’ve talked about you as a coach, but in regards to you as a business owner, which you now are, right? Where were you before FBM, and what… like, how would you distinguish yourself to where you were before to… from where you were before to where you are now as a business owner? What knowledge do you know? What confidence? What lessons have you gained from that?
Will: Yeah, that’s a great question. I would feel like before, I was like… I didn’t know what I really wanted, and I didn’t really have anything to grab onto that seemed attainable. Like, I always knew that I wanted to do, you know, some things with my life that are past just teaching a few lessons and making a few bucks here and there with gigs. Because, you know, that’s the life as a musician. You could make it big, but the odds of that are… just, you got to be real with yourself, you know. The odds of that are low. Like, even if you’re a great musician and you have a cool band and you market yourself well, like, it’s an industry that’s just super ruthless.
Will: So my realization was just like, “I need another plan, and it’s either music or something else, but I need another plan.” And yeah, the fact… putting the first foot in the door in FBM and starting to set some goals and like, “Oh, did that! Whoa, that’s checked, check that, check that,” and feeling like I have this road map that kind of felt like a launchpad almost. And understanding that really, like, you just set a goal, you work at it, you get there. You set a goal, you work at it, you get there. And so now anything feels attainable as a business owner. Before, it was just like this big mystery, and now I’m just like, “No, it’s just goals that have to be broken down. And if I don’t know how to break them down, that means I need coaching. If I don’t know what to do, that means I need someone else to help me do that.”
Will: And so right now, I feel like I can see the road ahead to like maybe the 15-20K. Like, I kind of know the… I have an idea of what funnels look like and what I… I made like a landing page and stuff like that. So I have an idea, but I know that I’m going to need more help with that. And so, but that’s fine. Now I know, “Just have someone help me. They’ve done it before. Like, you’ve done it before, and then I just execute. I execute, and I can get anywhere if I just keep doing that.” And that’s amazing because now the difference between me and making 50-100K a month is not just a dream. It feels like just a question of work and time. And having the right guidance and the right coaching. That’s a huge difference because yeah, you don’t know what to do with a dream, but…
Max: 100%, 100%! I know what you mean. It’s this whole idea of like learning that things are possible, and then beyond that, once you know that it’s possible, is like learning roughly what steps you need to be doing. And then knowing confidence within that you can take these steps. And if you can take them, you get the right guidance. Or even if you can’t take them, you take the right guidance, you do it even faster. It’s just… it was the same for me. It’s just like possibility. Like, I always, you know, coming from a small town, I was always like, “Things are not possible for me.” There’s this like… it’s almost like you’re looking into… you know, you’re the gorilla at the zoo, and you see behind the plexiglass is the real world. You can see it, but you can’t touch it, you can’t go through. And what you’ve described, it’s like the plexiglass vanishes, and you’re like, “The path is right there. All you have to do is walk it,” you know.
The Road Ahead – Future Plans And Final Words
Max: Will, what’s your Instagram? I would love to give you a shout out, love for people to be able to reach out to you if they want to have kickass guitar coaching.
Will: Yeah man, so it’s @willmetz_music.
Max: willmetz_music, we’re going to tag it, of course, here also underneath the description thing. Oh yeah, there you are! So give him a follow folks, check him out. And Will, what’s next for you? What are you going to do now? Next days, next year?
Will: Tonight I have a show, that’s really next. I had one yesterday. I’ve been kind of busy with recording and playing, which is great because now I can do it and I’m still having other business and stuff. But then, I also… I think yeah, just keeping going with FBM, and Roberto mentioned BBM, so I just want to… I just want to follow the path and keep delivering value to my clients right now, keep learning from the ones I have. And as I do that, I’d like to do an online course. I’ve been wanting to do that forever. And so kind of the model of online course and group and one-on-one, kind of this whole scenario or academy. I’d like to kind of start with guitar. That I think is the next big goal.
Max: Yeah, love it man! Well, let’s get you there. And you know, BBM being the advanced program, that’s exactly for that. So you know, man, Will, it’s such a pleasure to see you crushing. It’s so beautiful to see everyone just executing and crushing, and you know, going through the hard times but also sharing the good times with everyone. It’s really inspiring, man. My heart and soul goes out to you and everybody else. And keep pushing, keep crushing. And any other last words you have for anybody watching this right now?
Will: Yeah, I mean, I would say specifically if you’re a musician, and I would say just go for it and do it. There’s so many people… I’m talking to a bunch of musicians around me. They’re obviously curious and interested when I say, “You know, this is what I’m doing.” They’re like, “Wait, what?” And they start asking me, but there is that… there is that doubt. And I’m like, “Man, just… what is… whatever the price is, like, it’s worth it. Just do it. Like, don’t hesitate. What’s the worst case scenario? You learn a bunch of stuff, you know. I don’t know, like, that’s the worst that could ever happen.” And so, so yeah, go for it. Don’t… if you have skills and if you feel like you’re undervalued and you could do more, you need help. And you guys, you know, I’m not… you guys do a great job. It’s everything is well organized. It’s so… I would say just go for it, don’t hesitate.
Max: Beautiful man, thanks for sharing that. Yeah dude, thanks a lot man, I really appreciate your time, of course. And have fun at the show tomorrow, man. What kind of show is it going to be? Is it rock or jazz or what do you do?
Will: I play mostly… oh man, I’ve been through everything. I started with like pop, and then pop, then I heard guitar solos and I was like, “All-in guitar solo.” I went deep into metal, and then yes, metal gave me the technique, but then I was like, “I don’t understand what I’m doing.” So now went to jazz, and that taught me harmony, and I’m like, “Oh okay, now I get what I’m doing.” And I like fusion. I like kind of the, you know, soul funk things that like are little groovy, make people dance. I go through all of these, but I really enjoy everything. I mean, good music is… what is it? I think it’s Duke Ellington said there’s only two types of music: good music and bad music. And I like good music.
Max: Love it man! Well dude, like yeah man, dude, thank you for everything. Thank you for executing and all that jazz. I’ll see you hopefully soon in the next couple calls and all that jazz. And you know, whatever you need from us, you know where to find us. And other than that, I wish you a great rest of your weekend, buddy.
